Strategic alignment for growth: The eShandi multi-market expansion after the VC4A Venture Showcase

For eShandi, a fintech platform dedicated to banking the unbanked across Africa, the journey of rapid multi-market expansion required both ambition, strategic alignment and the right capital. This case study explores the experience of eShandi and its co-founder, Chilufya Mutale-Mwila, and how their participation in the VC4A Venture Showcase helped them navigate the complexities of scaling and secure a clear path toward impactful long-term growth.

Chilufya’s commitment to financial inclusion is deeply personal, stemming from her extensive background in the microfinance industry, where she worked her way up from a data entry intern to a leadership position serving the base of the pyramid segment. This experience gave her deep insights into the financial challenges of underserved communities, inspiring her to co-found eShandi with a vision for accessible, digital financial services for all.

The scaling challenge

Before joining the Venture Showcase, eShandi faced the inherent challenges of managing rapid multi-market expansion across Africa. A main hurdle was not just finding capital, but finding the right strategic partners and investors whose vision and values aligned with their long-term goal of social impact and massive scale. To successfully build a challenger bank, they required external validation and the right platform to attract investors who were ready to support their extensive reach.

“Patience is key in fundraising, especially when seeking the right investor fit, without compromising on values or impact.”

Accelerating growth at the VC4A Venture Showcase

eShandi participated in the VC4A Venture Showcase Africa in 2022, VC4A’s first women-focused edition since the Showcase’s inception in 2017.

Chilufya emphasized that the program was important in helping them refine their positioning and fundraising approach. She noted that the Venture Showcase provided valuable networking, mentorship, and feedback that accelerated their development.

“The VC4A Venture Showcase was pivotal in helping us better align with the right investors and strategic partners for our long-term vision.”

A key piece of advice Chilufya now offers to other founders is to understand that with fundraising, patience is key. She learned to stress the importance of finding the right investor fit without compromising on the venture’s core values or impact in pursuit of capital.

Expansion and future ambitions

Since participating in the program, eShandi has achieved significant milestones, particularly in market expansion. They have successfully expanded their footprint to three new African markets: Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Kenya. This extensive reach now serves more than 1.5 million customers, demonstrating substantial growth and market penetration.

Looking ahead, Chilufya outlined that eShandi has bold plans to serve 10 million customers across Africa by the end of 2025. This goal will be supported by a focus on building scalable infrastructure, strengthening compliance and risk management, and forging crucial strategic partnerships across the continent.

Chilufya concluded by advocating for the continued support of the program, recognizing its profound role in empowering diverse entrepreneurial talent.

“The Venture Showcase is an invaluable tool that empowers more women entrepreneurs who are solving problems in underserved markets across Africa.”
