Preparing for scale: How OmniBiz unlocked strategic insights at the VC4A Venture Showcase

The core mission of Omnibiz, a flagship product of OmniRetail transcends technology but goes on to economic empowerment. As Archit Bagaria, Head of Investments and Co-founder affirmed,“78% of all merchants on our digital platform are women entrepreneurs,” showing the company’s role in digitising retail and creating sustainable income opportunities across Africa. This high-impact, scalable innovation is precisely what the VC4A Venture Showcase is designed to amplify.

In the fast-paced African market, many high-potential startups need more than just capital; they need strategic fortification to become truly investor-ready and resilient to volatility. The Showcase solves this by providing a platform that spotlights leading ventures for SEED or Series A investment, supported by expert masterclasses, technical coaching, and essential investor exposure. This case study details how Omnibiz leveraged this platform to achieve strategic clarity and close a major funding round.

The challenge: Fortifying the investment thesis in Nigeria’s retail landscape

In 2019, Omnibiz set out to digitize the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) retail sector, swiftly building a platform that integrated an e-commerce solution, a distributor management system, and its payments solution,OmniPay.

Before joining the2023 VC4A Venture Showcase, and while achieving rapid growth, contended with significant market pressures. Archit cited constant currency fluctuation in Nigeria, the typical thin profit margins of the FMCG industry, and the critical challenge of attracting and retaining high-quality talent amidst Nigeria’sbrain drain. To secure their Series A, Omnibiz recognized they needed external validation and strategic insights to fortify their pitch against these formidable, volatile realities.

Gaining clarity at the VC4A Venture Showcase

Omnibiz was one of 12 companies selected for the 2023 VC4A Venture Showcase Africa program’s Series A track. For Archit, the engagement was a vital opportunity to step back from operations and gain strategic clarity, offering two key benefits: refining their product-market fit and supporting their ongoing fundraising efforts.

During the Venture Showcase, a significant turning point was a session focused on investor readiness and term sheets. By hearing from peers who were facing similar challenges, Omnibiz team gained a core strategic advantage: these shared insights enabled them to preempt and prepare better for their own rigorous investor conversations. The program served as a strategic filter, transforming internal data into an outward-facing, investor-ready thesis.

“I found this period of engagement at the VC4A showcase to be a valuable opportunity to learn from other founders, gain insights on fundraising, and build connections.”

  • Regional growth: Omnibiz now connects150,000 retailers and6,000 distributors across Nigeria, Ghana, and Ivory Coast.

Beyond financial metrics, Omnibiz has had a huge community impact. Archit shared their extensive on-the-ground presence, with around 450 account managers providing direct support to retailers. He detailed how their platform enables significant economic uplift for their prime retailers of approximatelyeight times more than their previous earnings prior to joining the OmniBiz network. This empowerment has also led a number of retailers to open more retail stores, increasing their community impact. The income lift extends to its logistics partners, with one partner scaling from two to 20 distribution vans.
